Complete Subject Leadership

Developing middle leaders to build capacity and ensure sustainable school/college improvement

A two day residential course to develop the key skills, techniques and attributes of successful and effective middle leaders in secondary schools


Target Audience: Existing Heads of Department and aspiring subject leaders in secondary schools and FE colleges.

Course Outcomes: Participants will learn how to:

Develop a strategic vision for their subject area by:

Focusing systematically on teaching and learning.
Understanding methods of rigorous self-evaluation.
Exploring their subject’s contribution to the whole school.
Monitoring and evaluating personal and team performance.
Using effective reviewing techniques.
Planning strategically, ensuring targets are both challenging but realistic.

Develop operational approaches to deliver quality by:

Using coaching, mentoring and other interventions to improve performance and distribute leadership within their team.
Applying effective improvement strategies to all students within their subject area.
Deploying, managing and monitoring resources effectively and efficiently for the benefit of all students.
Working effectively with a range of stakeholders including the Leadership Team and community partners.
Communicating effectively with people at different levels in the school hierarchy.

Outline course programme

The course is divided into two distinct phases:

Day One—Strategic Subject Leadership
From 10.00 Arrival and registration
11.00 Welcome and course overview.
11.15 Where are we now and how do we know?
monitoring, evaluation& review and the qualities
of a good subject SEF.
12.30 Lunch
13.20 Where do we want to be? The importance
of developing a shared team vision & shared
team values.
14.20 How are we going to get there? (1) Bringing
SEF and vision together in a focused and coherent
visionary strategic plan—a suggested model.
15.20 Break
15.45 How are we going to get there? (2) Leading
and managing innovations and projects
16.45 What next? Effective MER techniques to ensure
progress is made to meeting goals and targets
18.30 The Strategic Dimension—bringing it all together
reflection, questions and discussion.
19.00 Dinner

Day Two— Operational Subject Leadership
9.00 Ethical leadership — ‘walking the walk, talking the
talk’.
9.30 Staff—coaching, mentoring and dealing with
underperformance. Understanding the
methodology and its benefits.
11.00 Break
11.15 Pupils— intervening to succeed
12.30 Lunch
13.20 Effective communication & dealing with difficult people.
14.20 The whole school dimension—working with SLT and other
stakeholders
15.10 Plenary and discussion.

Course leaders

Steve Ely is a Deputy Headteacher with responsibility for teaching and learning and staff development at a school in South Yorkshire. Steve has developed a programme of middle leadership training in his own school and across Barnsley LA, where it has received praise for its breadth and relevance. During his time as Head of RE, Steve not only raised the academic profile of the subject, but also consistently delivered the best GCSE results in school.
John Walker is a freelance CPD consultant who also works as Professional Development Leader at The National Science Learning Centre in York. An ex-Assistant Principal and Head of Science, John has extensive experience of managing teams and improving staff and student performance, as well as co-ordination of the specialist subject in a specialist school
